The General Council of Haute-Garonne acquired the castle in 1984. Through ambitious restoration, this heritage classified as a historical monument is now open to the public. From May to September, a number of services are offered to visitors : guided tours, contemporary art exhibitions, live shows.

In 1579 the architect Dominique Bachelier undertook the construction of the château de Laréole for Pierre de Cheverry, a famous Toulouse pastel (woad) merchant. The defensive elements (moat, guardroom, towers) were imposed by the Wars of Religion but the decoration alternating brick and stone is characteristic of Laréole. The main building is an example of the architectural avant-garde of that time. It is a testimony of Cheverry’s taste for luxury with a modern layout including a large reception room and apartments.
