An exploratory song inspired by Catherine Ribeiro + Alpes The term ‘crux’ is mainly used in climbing to refer to the most difficult or technically demanding section of a route. This section, which is often critical, requires specific skills, intense physical effort or a particular technique to be overcome. Nothing is lost (…) everything is transformed. Following a disappearance, spaces open up or close down. Catherine Ribeiro’s departure in August 2024 overlooks a vertiginous cliff face: the first crampon sets us on the path to her collaboration with the group Alpes (originally named 2bis) and promises a long ascent. Catherine’s voice, whose timbre and depth are deeply moving, transcends words: she explores the material with breaths, whispers, cries and exclamations, and it is astonishing. At this point, she pushes the boundaries, committing herself entirely, from the soles of her feet to the very tip of her fringe, rejecting the comfort of mainstream pop conventions, to which she could easily lay claim. For singing is also a political act; the world is in a bad way and we must fight as best we can, with what we have: ‘…a revolutionary fist bursting from my mouth…’
